Suze Orman

In May of 2008 Time magazine named Suze Orman as one of the Time 100, The World's Most Influential People. Originally from the South Side of Chicago, Orman is known for her sharp, no nonsense financial advice. Orman's working-class background and can-do attitude have made her a success with audiences around the world.

After a six-year waitressing career at Buttercup Bakery in Berkeley, Calif., Orman decided she wanted to pursue her dream of opening her own restaurant. A group of longtime customers pooled their money and gave Orman a loan of $50,000 to help her fulfill that dream and Orman quickly invested the money. Just four months later, Orman discovered she was misled and all the money was gone.

Orman knew waitressing alone would not make the money back and she began learning more about finances and investing. Orman instantly found success in finance and went on to open her own financial planning firm, and of course, pay back her former customers from Buttercup Bakery.

Today, Orman is a two-time Emmy Award-winning television host, New York Times bestselling author and motivational speaker. Named the top female motivational speaker in the United States in 2007 by Business Week, Orman has been featured in almost every major publication in the country, and makes regular appearances on programs including the "Oprah Winfrey Show," "Larry King Live," "The View" and "The Today Show."

In April 2008, Orman was presented with the Amelia Earhart Award for her message of financial empowerment for women and in October 2008, she will be the recipient of the National Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign. Orman's trademark style and meaningful tips for managing money have made her a popular force in the world of personal finance.
