Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal was born in New York City to film director Stephen Gyllenhaal and film producer and screenwriter Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal. She is the sister of Academy Award-winning actor Jake Gyllenhaal. After being raised in Los Angeles and attending Harvard-Westlake prep school, Gyllenhaal moved back to New York to attend Columbia University, where she started acting and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. During this time, she also studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and continued to develop her love of theater and acting following graduation.

As a young actress, Maggie appeared in the indie cult hit Donnie Darko, alongside her brother Jake. Her break-out role was in the dark comedy Secretary, for which she earned her first Golden Globe nomination. In 2010, Gyllenhaal appeared in Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, the sequel to the 2005 film Nanny McPhee. She played Mrs. Isabel Green, a mom who raises her children on a farm and receives Nanny McPhee's medal for Leaps of Faith. In 2009, she starred in the musical-drama Crazy Heart, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She played Jean Craddock, a mother and journalist. She appeared in The Dark Knight which went on to be a great success, setting a new opening weekend box office record for North America, and becoming the eighth highest-grossing film of all time. Other notable performances include her roles in Riding in Cars with Boys, Monster House, Sherrybaby and Mona Lisa Smile. Currently, she's filming Steel Town, a movie about two mothers teaming up to help make a difference at a local school.

Currently, Maggie lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband, actor Peter Sarsgaard, and their 4-year-old daughter, Ramona. She has done work with several non-profit groups and regularly volunteers with various groups to help those less fortunate, including TrickleUp.org, which helps impoverished people start micro-enterprises, and Witness, a group which helps to expose human rights violations. Aside from acting and charity work, Gyllenhaal has also done modeling for Miu Miu, Reebok, and Agent Provocateur.
